#42 : Joel Ely

Editor’s Note:
The yellow polka dots, pink vinyl and body pops of Mr Blobby in the character’s 1993 Number One are a music video image that will never leave me. In the wake of the news that MTV will begin to close up shop at the end of this year, memories come flooding back of seasonal hits and their accompanying vids that were so cherished down the generations.
But after Simon Cowell’s music machine engulfed the festive charts, reality TV killed the video star, which in turn killed the radio star. Fortunately, we at ‘cene magazine don’t hold a grudge and wouldn’t dream of mentioning the ‘C’ word in relation to Simon. In this edition our Alternative Gift Guide makes its return, offering presents and events for this time of year. We also talk about Kentish identity with artist Joel Ely, reminisce with Sandhouse, document football culture with Lower Block, plus much more. Enjoy
