Where Else? launches new exhibition space in Margate
Margate’s grassroots music venue, Where Else? will host the private view of The Drawing Machine, a collection of international musicians’ artworks
Margate’s grassroots music venue, Where Else? will be celebrating the launch of its new exhibition space with the private view of The Drawing Machine, a collection of international musicians’ visual artworks this Friday 28th April at 6:30pm.
The exhibition will feature works from a cast of musicians who usually fill concert halls around the world; Richard Dawson, Adam Green of The Moldy Peaches , Kate Stables (This is The Kit), Katy J Pearson, Tom Dowse (Dry Cleaning) and many more will all be exhibiting their ‘other’ work for music and art fans to admire.
The exhibition (running from 28th April to 26th May) is set to be the first of a series of art happenings on the ground floor of the space as venue programmer Sammy Clarke explains: “Music and visual art are intrinsically linked and have been influenced by each other for centuries; In more recent decades iconic album art, eye-catching music videos or wondrously compelling gig and tour posters have all been inspired by the musical movements that they exist within.
“I’m excited about the addition of this new string to our venue’s bow with the opening of the exhibition space adding yet another dimension to our programming. Thanet is home to many wonderful and eclectic art galleries which we are very lucky to have. For ours, there will always be a musical thread running through the cultural themes of what we choose to exhibit.”
The Drawing Machine is a collection of artworks from international musicians curated by arts and music organisation ‘It’s Cosy Inside’. Originally gathered off the back of the ‘Super Cool Drawing Machine’ exhibition that toured independent music venues that were temporarily closed across the UK due to the effects of the coronavirus pandemic in 2021.
The collections include ceramics, collage, photography, illustration screen prints and paintings. All from a wide spread source of inspiration and subject matter. Each artwork reveals yet another layer of an already much lauded musician’s creative output.
The Drawing Machine will be concluded with an after party with live music performances from exhibiting musicians Japanese folk artist Yama Warashi and experimental jazz supergroup Ichigo Evil.
A full list of exhibiting musicians include: Adam Green, Austin (Snapped Ankles), Chad Vangaalen, Dana Gavanski, H.Hawkline, Ichi, Kate Stables (This is The Kit), Katy J Pearson, Leafcutter John, Richard Dawson, Tara Clerkin, Tom Dowse (Dry Cleaning), Tori Kudu (Maher Shalal Hash Baz) and Yoshino Shigahara (Yama Warashi).
