REVIEW: SHOULD I VISIT PO'BOYS CANTERBURY?

Family-run, packed with originality and Creole flavours, a lunch stop is a must

PO’BOYS, CANTERBURY

@poboyscanterbury

Despite having only opened in the summer, Po’boys on the corner of Canterbury’s High Street and Best Lane has already staked its claim as the most popular new opening in the city in 2022.

Family-run, packed with originality and passion, a lunch stop is a must. Traditionally, a Po’boy is a sandwich originating from Louisiana in the United States, using New Orleans bread filled with Creole flavours.

The bread, which is light and fluffy because it uses more water and less flour than a normal French baguette, is amazing, but it’s fair to say that Po’boys Canterbury has got very creative with its fillings. From The Cyprian (avocado, black olives, micro herbs, grilled halloumi, lettuce and sun-dried tomato pesto) to The Cuban (roasted pork shoulder, honey-roasted ham, dill pickles, Swiss cheese and American yellow mustard).

On our visit we went for The Original - we had to, didn’t we? - which was packed with breaded Atlantic shrimp, shredded lettuce and tomatoes, with a pot of rémoulade sauce (mayo based with Cajun spices and hot sauce added) on the side for dipping. On the side we added in some zinging Creole fries.

We also took on The French, with its breaded chicken breast, mix of Swiss and Mozzarella cheese, crispy fried onions, honey-roasted ham and sweet maple mustard sauce. It just sounds good already, doesn’t it. And it was. All handmade on site, with freshly created desserts available in the unlikely event that you aren’t absolutely stuffed. Really tasty and really original. But a word of warning, you may get messy. Filled.
