Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Turin Brakes and Michael Gira some of the big names in Gulbenkian Arts Centre’s autumn programme
The season, which kicked off in September with over 1,000 people enjoying the political voice of Pussy Riot, continues with a surprising mix that covers world music, including a stand out gig by Ladysmith Black Mambazo, classical, with Gulbenkian welcoming Joanna MacGregor, and folk including legend Shirley Collins.
The arts centre continues its successful partnership with Folk in the Barn, presenting Turin Brakes, Calan and vocalist Paul Young’s Los Pacaminos. They are also joining together with local promoters Free Range who are celebrating their 10th Anniversary with two intriguing events in the Colyer-Fergusson Hall.

Enjoy the talents of two master musicians as they come together for this very special event. ‘Living legend’ Valentin Clastrier is considered the inventor of the modern hurdy-gurdy which, in his hands, creates a magical and virtuoso universe.

John Woolrich’s music – played live by the Benyounes Quartet – is coupled with specially created visual responses by international artists and filmmakers.

Turin Brakes return for their sixth visit to Folk in the Barn, we love their melodic, dreamy-folky grooves. 2022 sees Turin Brakes release their ninth studio album – Wide-Eyed Nowhere.

Michael Gira founded the seminal NYC band SWANS in 1982. Quickly infamous for their punishing, brutal and repetitive onslaughts of sound, SWANS gradually transformed over 15 years through proto-industrial rock, to gentle acoustic-based songs.
