Gastro Galley launches at the Famous Ship Inn in Sandgate
The beach-side spot will even be offering collection points in the warmer months so you don’t have to stray too far from your towel
Pete Cook, the new landlord of the Famous Ship Inn in Sandgate, Folkestone, has big plans for his pub.
In fact, just three months into the job and he’s ticked one off the list already; changing the name.
“There are so many Ship Inns along the coast I thought adding Famous would make it stand out,” he explains.
He’s also been pouring his energy into elevating the food offering, with a fine-dining restaurant and take-away venture Gastro Galley.
With the latter, Pete and his team of chefs have devised a menu which they hope will knock spots off others and help them roll out the brand with pop-ups at festivals and other events across the county and further afield.
“We’ve got the fine-dining with an a la carte menu, but we also wanted to create a different brand to cater for the tourists, the local community and all those people using the beach,” he said.
“So it’s a takeaway using the same chefs as the fine-dining restaurant and same high quality of food, but the style will be different and aimed at a younger audience.
“We’re trying to move away from old style menus and offer something modern and trendy, giving them an alternative to other places that are on Just Eat.
“It will be an all-day offering with classic takeaway food but we want to do it in an upmarket way - basically restaurant-standard food which you can have on the beach or at home.”
He says they’re moving away from the word burger, too, and so on the menu you’ll instead find the Dirty Beach and Beach Bum BBQ, both featuring smashed patties, saliva-inducing fillings and rosemary fries.
You’ll also find their chicken burger (oops!) Four Cluck Sake, the Stuff my Face and vegan This Beets Meat as well as nachos, mac ‘n cheese and sides including halloumi fries, cauliflower bites and loaded chips.
There are breakfast options, too, with all the favourites as well as French toast, omelettes and pancakes.
Pete says customers can order food for delivery or collection to eat at home as you would normally, but due to the pub’s location - directly on the beach front - he’s adding in a little extra.
“Part of the plan is to have collection points on the beach, so if someone wants to order food but doesn’t want to walk all the way to the pub, we can do the next best thing and bring it to a collection point a bit closer to them,” he explains.
He added: “We’ve got lots of tourists here, the local community and people on the beach, so we wanted to create a brand to cater for them all.”
