BITE CLUB - REVIEW - The Red Lion, Hernhill, Faversham
“It has the chops to dish out a brilliant Sunday roast!”
There are few more picturesque settings than that of The Red Lion at Hernhill (@hernhillredlion).
Sat across from the steepled church and the village green, the 14th-century pub has exposed beams, flagstone floors and an open fire. It turns out it also has the chops to dish out a brilliant Sunday roast.
Let’s begin with the key factor, the availability of the ‘mixed roast’, which is a portion of roasted pork belly, roast chicken and roasted 28-day aged sirloin of beef all on the same plate for a reasonable £26.
The pork belly came with a crunchy and perfectly light crackling piece, while the beef and chicken both remained beautifully succulent and juicy.
Crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, the roast potatoes were on point, while a medley of seasonal vegetables including red cabbage, mange tout, tenderstem broccoli and carrot packed out the flavours. But being extra-hungry, we ordered the accompanying creamy cauliflower cheese boat (£4.50), which was plenty between two. OK, we then got greedy and added the juicy pigs in blankets (£3.50) in practice for Christmas, as well as a portion of stuffing, which was so grand we had to take a slice of it home!
There are plenty of other options available on the Sunday menu from the starters, mains and desserts, but the roast is the king and all that was needed. A nice touch is the children’s roast, which comes at half the price of the adult version. The whole meal was an absolute winter-warmer!
