WINE AND VINYL HEAVEN AT PENELOPE IN RAMSGATE

Supported Article: Ibiza DJ and first-class flight attendant collaborate on new venue

An Ibiza DJ and first-class flight attendant have collaborated to create Penelope - a lively natural wine bar and vinyl-listening haven in Ramsgate.

Step into a warm and inviting ambience, adorned with a low-lit, earthy and effortlessly stylish interior.

Those in search of an immersive experience can savour extraordinary, low-intervention wines from exceptional small producers.

The ever-evolving by-the-glass selection features effervescent Pét-Nats, textured cloudy whites, unfiltered orange wines, chilled reds and timeless classics. Guests often embark on a journey through the entire menu, guided by amiable staff in an unpretentious atmosphere.

Venturing beyond wine, Penelope offers craft beers from the Kernel brewery, low- and 0%-alcohol alternatives and even wild-fermented kombucha - a delightful exploration for non-drinkers seeking new experiences.

On weekends, the rhythm of DJ sounds emanates from the Funktion-One sound system and valve-based DJ mixer by Mastersounds.

Breese, Penelope’s founder and resident DJ, regularly welcomes esteemed guest spinners, showcasing their record collections. These sonic sessions are often recorded as podcasts and can accompany your home experience while you enjoy the bar’s delectable takeaway wines.

Online acclaim aptly captures Penelope’s essence: “... nestled between Lisbon’s backstreet

bars, Paris’s 11th arrondissement cellars, with a touch of raw Berlin edge…”

Jody and Jim Breese began their journey amid the vibrant bar scene in Birmingham during the late ’90s. Jody’s adept management turned chain pubs and bars into daily triumphs, while Jim orchestrated DJ magic and promoted lively parties. Jody took a detour, ascending to an upper-class flight attendant, while Jim’s DJ prowess echoed through some of the world’s finest bars, including several summers at Cafe Mambo in Ibiza and a decade-long tenure at world-renowned beach bar Ku De Ta in Bali.

After circling the globe and contributing to esteemed venues, the decision to create Penelope in their hometown felt serendipitous.

Crafting the bar’s visual identity, Peter Chadwick from This Brutal House, London, took the lead in graphic design, as he did when creating visuals for Breese’s ‘Balearic’ compilation series and Ibiza-inspired record label.

On Ramsgate’s Harbour Street, Penelope is open Thursday to Sunday, from afternoon to evening, and expanding as we move into spring and summer. With vibrant beats, unforgettable moments and exquisite natural wines, Penelope’s opening signals thrilling times on the horizon for Ramsgate.
