Should I visit The Good Egg in Cliftonville, Margate?
“… any time of day is the right time of day to visit”
A Middle Eastern brunch spot in the heart of Cliftonville’s trendy Northdown Road, The Good Egg (@thegoodegg_margate) is the Kentish cousin of its highly-thought-of London fam in Camden and Stoke Newington.
While eggs are prevalent on the menu, they aren’t actually the focus and the brunchy feel actually extends into dinner sittings on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings. Local Northdown Brewery and Xylo beers, international wines and a cocktail list that has you covered from Bloody Marys and Picklebacks to Mimosas and Negronis means that almost any time of day is the right time of day to visit.
Local artwork adorns the lilac walls and the natural light pouring through the huge windows of the converted corner store makes it feel airy and fresh. There’s thought and feeling across the board, from the granola, yoghurt and seasonal fruit dish donating profits to the War Child charity to the kids’ toasted cheese pitta with ketchup plate.
While we were tempted to go for the stunningly colourful (note, everything looks colourful and stunning), Babka French toast with blood-orange caramel, fresh orange, cashew and almond streusel - with an optional extra of streaky bacon - we were actually in a more pick-it-up-with-your-hands type of mood.
We took on the Sabih - a sumptuous pita stuffed with fried aubergine, fudgy eggs, tahini, mango amba, dak dak, pickles and tangy zhoug. It’s a brilliantly constructed, perfectly filling parcel of flavour. We also took on the house-cured salt beef brisket pita with smoked cheddar, spicy Russian dressing and garlic and dill kraut. On the side we had the za’atar (herby) potatoes, crisped up and ready to be dunked in mayo. Flavour-filled!
