Review: Should I visit... The Skull Bar, Maidstone?

You know in Friends when Ross talks about his ultimate Thanksgiving sandwich and the gravy laden ‘moistmaker’ in the middle...well..

There’s a bit of a buzz in and around Maidstone’s Star Arcade, one that perhaps hadn’t been there for a little while. At the centre of the covered row, and creating a fair portion of the lively atmosphere, is The Skull Bar. A hub dedicated to pairing alternative music with dirty burgers, hotdogs, craft beers and cocktails.

There’s always something going on, with quizzes, live acts and even Legless Lego - where customers can bring their own bricks and create while they quaff.

It’s hard not to spend at least the first 10 minutes of your visit gawping at the various pieces of street-art, the guitar and stickers wall and ‘leave your message here’ loos (pen provided). It’s quirky. But it’s also quality. The Skull Bar House Lager or the gluten-free Skull Crusher Pilsner, is brewed locally while the taps and cans offer also features the likes of Moot and other Kent-based breweries - not to mention some absolutely naughty nationals.

The menu is packed full of burger and hotdog variations, along with veggie and vegan versions. Just some that caught the eye were the ‘Limp Briskit’ (with smashed beef patties topped with brisket, pickled red onions, American cheese and bbq sauce), as well as the ‘Meatalica’ (with smashed beef patty, topped with a wild boar hotdog, bacon, double cheese, mustard and chipotle ketchup).

Alongside a generous portion of skin-on fries, we chose the ‘Linkin Pork’. The juicy smashed pattie (you can opt to triple-up if you want) was melt-in-the-mouth. It was topped by a helping of succulent pulled pork with American cheese and mustard mayo for a lively punch. But there’s more. You know in Friends when Ross talks about his ultimate Thanksgiving sandwich and the gravy laden ‘moistmaker’ in the middle. Well, Linkin Pork’s secret weapon is the patty of stuffing (like Sunday roast-type stuffing) sitting at the bottom of the burger that is absolutely stunning. Beautifully created and expertly delivered. Rock on.
