Pizzeria, pop-up bar and ‘vibey’ music studio planned for Ramsgate boating pool
The ambitious proposals to transform the site also include an in-house bakery with cafe
A pizzeria, in-house bakery, pop-up bar and music studio could be opened at Ramsgate Boating Pool, creating a revived clifftop destination.
Thanet council is currently in talks with the Ramsgate Boating Pool (RBP) group, who want to take over and transform the popular seaside spot.
The premises is owned by the authority and leased to an existing tenant, who has decided to sell her business.
RBP group is now appealing to the council to cease the current arrangements and grant a new lease to them for the site, known as Westcliffe Leisure Park.
If agreed, they plan to open a family-friendly venue, with a pizzeria, cafe and in-house bakery in the west building, and a pop-up bar and music studio in the east building.
The use of the boating pool will stay the same and remain open for model boating clubs.
RBP group is made up of six members, including Ed Curry and Abi Hubbard, who are currently plying their pizza trade in a pop-up capacity at the boating pool.
They would run the Sourdough Eyes pizza operation under the new plans.
Then there’s Adam Hubbard, who has worked for his family’s Whitstable bakery for seven years and ran the Blean Baker. He would operate the in-house bakery.
Set designer Leah Morgan and Simon Trought, who has run a commercial recording studio for 20 years, will bring their industry experience to the venture, too, and business expert Tim Hughes will be financial director.
In their mission statement, submitted to the council, the team says they will restore the boating pool and maintain the iconic buildings and pool, to bring a new lease of life to the site.
“We will provide a creative family-friendly venue with an eclectic mix of quality food, drink and entertainment.
“The community will be at the heart of the business. Alongside business operations, we will offer a programme of creative workshops for all visitors.
“The pizzeria, cafe, pop-up bar and music studio will be a financial hub generating revenue.
“We will allocate a percentage of all revenues to a fund which we will use to restore and maintain the building.”
Ramsgate Boating Pool was built in 1929 and has been a key attraction over the years.
Pop-up bar Ravensgate-on-Sea - run by The Ravensgate Arms - currently operates at the site and discussions will take place as to whether they wish to continue there or if another retailer needs to be found.
Under the plans, the cafe will operate in the morning and the pizzeria in the afternoon and evening.
A pizza oven will be installed, acting as a visual centre piece, and used to make sourdough pizza, to eat in or take away.
The bakery and cafe will offer freshly baked goods, from typical favourites to experimental new trends.
Soup Studio plans to continue its brand by creating a music recording and production space.
RBP group said: “This will cater to the local music scene and attract clients from afar who are looking for a vibey seaside studio alternative to work in.
“Simon Trought has a close affiliation with Big Jelly Studio and The Ramsgate Music Hall and plans to work alongside them to strengthen the town’s standing as a music-related destination.”
The group says holidaymakers, particularly Londoners, are becoming more and more attracted to artisan culinary specialities.
“We can be part of providing this for Ramsgate’s tourist sector,” they added.
“The acquisition of the appropriate lease will enable RBP to deliver on our mission and restoration programme.”
Thanet council is due to discuss the plans at a meeting on Thursday.
