REVIEW: The Athenian, Canterbury

Greek takeaway champs deliver the food of the Gods

Discovering that Greek food pros The Athenian (@theathenianfood) had started to operate a ‘ghost kitchen’ at the Maidens Head in Canterbury must have been how Socrates felt when founding Western philosophy - epic.

Starting out as a market stall back in 2014, The Athenian is led by Tim Vasilakis and has grown to include numerous ghost kitchens across the UK but all operating using the strong ingredient-led and ethical principles set at the centre of the brand.

Our delivery to Faversham with Uber Eats brought a neat parcel of Hellenic goodies wrapped in foil-insulated packaging and recyclable cardboard (they don’t use single-use plastics).

The there are numerous vegan options on the menu, but this was a meat-based order, with the Greek classic moussaka (£11.95) to kick things off – a delicious combination of flavours from the lasagne-esque layers of aubergine, potatoes, beef mince in tomato sauce and bechamel top.

For sides, we had a delicious portion of dolmadakia (£7.95) with five handmade vine leaves stuffed with rice and minty Greek herbs. We also had the juicy courgette fritters - aka ‘Greek Falafel’ (£4.95), cooked in a crispy batter and served with the secret Athenian sauce.

The main event was the chicken gyros wrap (£9.95) - shavings of chicken marinated in Greek herbs, lemon juice and Greek olive oil. All wrapped inside a handmade pita with lettuce, tomatoes, red onions, parsley, oregano fries and truffle mayo, it was exquisite.

And we couldn’t have the chicken without having the pork, so the pork version (£9.95) also came along, but this time served with a traditional tzaziki (yoghurt, cucumber, garlic) sauce - an Acropolis of flavours. The food of the gods indeed!
