KENT'S NEW MUSIC: FT. ONA, CHARLIE TREES, PAIGE KENNEDY & BABY
New tracks coming from Kent’s freshest artists - added to #keepitkent Playlist
CHARLIE TREES - LOVE & WAVEY SCIENCE
Hailing from Gravesend, producer/MC Charlie Trees has been putting his own hazy and introspective twist on grime for some time.
After previously dropping singles Smile Back, Madness and Flowers, Charlie has just released debut mixtape Love & Wavey Science in collaboration with production duo Yrk Rd.
The record explores themes of ego, self-image, depression, hallucinogenic experience and its medicinal effect on all of the above. It is described as a “sonic narrative/diary which encapsulates Charlie’s own journey of self-reflection and improvement”.
On making the record, Charlie said: “Previously I had pretty savage anxiety and in that time period I did a lot of healing and changing for the better and it was almost like I captured a lot of those changes in my perspective in real time through the music.”
ONA - RIP
ONA creates anthems for the unseen masses, calling out to the lost to take control. Pulled from the art of Janelle Monáe, Afro futurism and the hip-hop, R&B and hyperpop genres, ONA’s music seeks to imagine a future world of technology, ecology and liberation.
ONA is a songwriter and music producer from Canterbury who was reached out to by Tom at Kent’s Tonetic Records after meeting at CCCU a few years prior. Working with the label, they have curated and expanded their style and now make their first music video debut with RIP.
“RIP tells the story of all the zeros feeling trapped inside themselves. This is for anyone who feels they would be better burying who they are than stepping into the light,” says ONA.
PAIGE KENNEDY - THIS IS THE GIRL
Fast rising alt-pop songwriter Paige Kennedy has released new single ‘This Is The Girl!’.
The new track comes with a hugely creative and enterprising cinematic video filmed on two night shoots in August 2022 on a tiny budget, using the road to an industrial estate just outside of Canterbury.
Kennedy says: “This Is The Girl!’ was inspired by the David Lynch film Mullholland Drive. It explores the way that celebrity worship has become a modern day religion. ‘The Girl’ is seen as an icon, fetishised for her youth and idolised…until it’s time for the internet to rip her down. From an artist’s point of view, it’s easy to be paranoid that the music industry is rigged and that there is always a pre-selected ‘chosen one’.”
BABY - POTHOLES
Kemsing’s BABY, AKA Luke Wyatt, has returned with his second single ‘Potholes’.
Following up ‘How U Been?’, which we featured back in June, the indie/punk/rap artist has struck gold again with a bittersweet, coming of age tale about living at mum’s in a hometown that he outgrew years ago.
Half spoken, half sung poetry flows over infectious indie guitar chords and drum machine grooves. Akin to early Jamie T and Bakar but with a unique ‘pint in one hand, ciggy in the other’ shrug.
