MAIDSTONE PRIDE EVENT LAUNCHES THIS JUNE

There will be a stage at Lockmeadow’s Coronation Square for a variety of performances

Maidstone is set to put itself on the Pride map this summer.

The family-friendly, LGBTQ+ celebration, which is set to become an annual event, will be held in the town centre on Saturday, June 22.

Organised by a non-profit organisation and committee, driven by the local young LGBTQ+ community, it will begin with a parade starting at noon from Sessions House, along Week Street to Jubilee Square, culminating in a celebration party at Lockmeadow from 2pm onwards.

There will be a stage at Lockmeadow’s Coronation Square for a variety of performances throughout the afternoon, along with food stalls and queer businesses, such as the Gay Glass Stall selling a variety of handmade items all of which represent the LGBTQ+ flags, Trash or Treasure and Kent Police’s network representing LGBTQ+ officers and staff.

Two sensational drag acts: The Madame (of MuMu’s), will act as host throughout the event, and Julie Glitter have been confirmed so far. A full line-up of performances will gradually be announced in the lead-up to the event.

The event was the brainchild of Maidstone Pride committee Chair, Kitty Eeles.

“We started Maidstone Pride because I felt like if we didn’t, then who else would?” she said. “I went to London and Medway Pride last year and they were both amazing and I wanted to know why Maidstone didn’t have a dedicated Pride event.

“The purpose is to help make Maidstone into a more acceptable and diverse area where anyone can feel represented and have something for them no matter who they are.”

Tess Salawa-Adam local business and charities co-ordinator on the committee, said: “I am really passionate about showing people we’re here and we’re queer. I feel proud because I'm standing up in front of people and making a real, positive change.”

Maidstone Pride is being organised by a passionate volunteer group of young LGBTQ+ community, supported by adult mentors from a spectrum of business backgrounds including; marketing and events, sound and production engineering, website design, theatre and business development.
