International artist unveils protest sculptures on Whitstable beach
Jason Decaires Taylor behind new works protesting against sewage pollution
International artist Jason deCaires Taylor (@jasondecairestaylor) has unveiled new works on Whitstable beach protesting against sewage pollution.
Outside The Old Neptune pub, the gathering of figures - including a fisherman, swimmer and parent and child - hold signs reading ‘Fish Not Faeces’, ‘People Over Profit’, ‘Like The Sea We Rise’ and ‘End Sewage Pollution’.
The Faversham-based artist took to social media yesterday to tease the arrival of the new works in conjunction with environmental pressure group SOS Whitstable, as they continue to campaign against Southern Water.
It read: “Stealth works!! When your taking on the powers that be… you have to be quick…. New works in Whitstable open tomorrow. In collaboration with @soswhitstable @berthafoundation #endsewagepollution #southernwater”
SOS Whitstable also took to social media to say: “Under the cover of darkness this morning we completed our latest campaign……more details to follow soon.”
The works will no doubt help to raise the profile of the long-running campaign that has seen numerous protests against sewage pollution across the Kent coast over the past two years.
Jason deCaires Taylor has been making environmentally-conscious statement pieces that carry an important message for more than two decades.
From the shallows of the Bahamas to Cannes in France, Aya Napa in Cyprus, the Maldives and Indonesia, Jason places environmentalism at the forefront of his work to raise awareness of the impact humans are having on ocean habitats.
It is not yet clear how long the sculpture will be in position.
