Wet Sounds Whitstable - The first underwater concert in Kent
Plunge into the water and immerse yourself in sound above and below the surface
Bring your swimsuit and goggles and dive into sound underwater as Joel Cahen plays surreal and abstract electronic music through multiple speakers above and below the water surface.
This is the first post-pandemic event of the internationally acclaimed sound experience Wet Sounds (@wetsoundslondon) before it heads off to an event in Zurich.
The first underwater concert in Kent happens on Saturday 11th June 2022 at Whitstable Swimming Pool for two shows only, as part of the satellite events of the Whitstable Biennial.
Dive in the pool immersed in music above and below the water surface as Joel Cahen plays surreal multi-channel electronic music through 10 speakers transforming the pool into an exceptional listening space. Underwater the sound is perceived by the skull and is super clear, detailed and heard as if it originates from inside your head, a bizarre sensation considering the surreal music played.
Sound travels 4.5 times quicker in water than in air and so all sense of directionality is lost underwater. The deeper you dive the sound becomes richer and with the sight of other swimmers hovering in zero-gravity merges into a strange and beautiful experience.
Wet Sounds has won the Adelaide Fringe Award in 2018, toured Australia, UK and Scandinavia. Installed as part of Red Bull Music Festival in Moscow and Montreal.
