A brand new skate lounge and bar has opened in Orange Street, Canterbury.

With chilled vibes, skate apparel and carefully-priced drinks, ‘Fred’ (@fredcafebar) has got a very different feel to anywhere else in the city.

Manager Louisa McShee says: "There’s a great skateboarding community in Canterbury, and we wanted people to come here and feel comfortable. I think the skaters get a bad rep, and we’ve had a few people come in and say they don’t feel comfortable anywhere else, but they do here, which is really nice.

“It's an apparel lounge and bar, so we will sell a few skateboarding accessories. People can come in and just chill.”

While classic gig posters, DJ decks and snare drum tables give it a very rock feel, the skate brand t-shirts and classic skateboards show the exact market that Fred is looking to attract - there’s even a big screen showing extreme sports and (sometimes) classic black and white films.

Behind the bar, the prices are seriously favourable… Beers: Grolsch (£3.50), Red Stripe (£4) and Neck Oil (£5) while a menu of cocktails (£6) include classics like an Old Fashioned, Espresso Martini and Long Island Ice Tea through to unique takes like the Bakewell Fizz (Maraschino Cherries, Diaronno, Kirsch & Prosecco), Twisted Mojito (Vanilla Absolute Vodka, Lime, Mint & Apple Juice) and the Fred signature cocktail... Flaming Zombie (£10 - White, Dark & Spiced Rum, Apricot Brandy, Grenadine, Pineapple, Grapefruit & Lime Juice).

You’ve got to give it a try.
