The Margate School announces 'chaotic expressionist' Shem exhibition
The London-based artist ‘s work will be on show throughout October
The Margate School has announced that renowned South London artist Shem (@shem_ahl) will be exhibiting throughout October (6th to 27th October 2023, 11am to 4pm).
Moving apparently seamlessly from his recent (May to August 2023) solo show ‘The Loser Wins,’ in Seoul, Shem reveals a new collection of work on canvas and found materials, closer to home, in Margate, Kent.
From ‘Green Screen’, an ironic, deceptively effortless display in minimalism, to the more characteristic exuberance of ‘Gold Thoughts’, this collection showcases Shem’s considerable range and stakes his claim amongst abstract expressionists, in his own lane, ‘chaotic expressionism’.
Shem continues his "characteristic provocation, who decides how an artist gets to be categorised?" with his exhibition at The Margate School.
Shem
Shem, b 1984, is a British-born, self-taught contemporary abstract expressionist painter. His own style, 'chaotic expressionism' evolved from his kinaesthetic brain, listening in as his eyes processed the colours of life and blended them with his thoughts.
The highlight of his early years was Rastafarian schooling in Tottenham, rich in multi-sensory
experience.
He says: “I have to keep something for myself as my s*#t’s so personal. If you want to know me, look into my canvas it’s all there.”
