Tales from the Arcade is an exhibition of arcade photographs by George Wilson taken in the early 1980s in Herne Bay.

In 1981 and 1982 George Wilson, graduate in Documentary Photography, spent two seasons as a bingo caller in Cain’s Amusements in Herne Bay. He documented the comings and goings at this typical British arcade.

Being displayed in Herne Bay’s Beach Creative CIC in partnership with Canterbury Christ Church University, the exhibition offers an insight into the communities formed in the arcades.

Wilson’s photographs remain the only known body of documentary photographs from British amusement arcades.

First exhibited at the Daphne Oram Gallery at CCCU. Many images are held on the British Culture Archive.

Also running at Beach Creaive is ‘Arcade Britannia’, an interactive digital recreation of two Herne Bay arcades created by CCCU’s Games Design team, led by Prof. Alan Meades. Previously shown at Somerset House, these digital arcades are housed within a playable period arcade machine!
Alongside the exhibition, Beach Creative will be hosting a number of events including a Championship, Mini ComicCon & workshops with more details to be released shortly.
