50 YEARS OF HIP-HOP CELEBRATED IN MARGATE WITH BEER N' TACOS
Margate’s own IWA (International Wrap Artists) Teams up with super-fly beer brand ‘Yeastie Boys’ for a one-off night to celebrate 50 Years of Hip-Hop!
Prepare to combine your Flava! As Margate’s International Wrap Artists and NZ brewing company Yeastie Boys pay homage to the 50th anniversary of Hip Hop with the ultimate Block Party!
For one night only, roll on back to 1973, as Cinque Ports Margate opens its doors to host two floors of hip hop beats with live performances from headliner JFB, Margate’s MIC Righteous and the collective sounds of Mr Shiver, TBX and Chu Maclean.
But first, a history lesson. Take note kids. From its beginnings Hip-Hop became the voice of the Bronx, bringing the community together to find escapism in music and dancing in the, now famous, block parties thrown at apartments in the area.
One of those was Cindy Campbell’s ‘Back To School block party’, thrown on 11th August 1973, was the most notable.
On that night, Cindy’s brother DJ KoolHerc, played the music he and his predominately black peers grew up on, but with a twist - instead of using one vinyl, he used two! And by extending the instrumental breaks he would switch between the two records.
He called this the merry-go-round and, in a time when Disco was king, this new sound was seen as the birth of hip-hop.
And now, IWA and Yeastie Boys cannot wait to celebrate that historic moment in Margate!
