Reviews Ft. Paper Verses, Mood, TYTHE, DS Lyte, Colour of Heartache & Tokyo Tea Room
REVIEWS:
TYTHE
Footsteps / 4:11
Thanet-based electronic music artist TYTHE has released his poignant new single Footsteps featuring the revered vocals of internationally acclaimed outfit Zola Blood.
Footsteps is an ‘atmospheric, breakbeat-led track capturing the ache of unlived lives and missed possibilities’. TYTHE (Julian Peck) and Matt West crossed paths almost two decades ago and had long felt a collaboration was inevitable. An emotive and distinctive sound, this release unexpectedly brings that shared history to fruition. History.
DS LYTE
BBM Baby / 3:13
BBM Baby is a 00s-inspired hard-hitting rave anthem from DS Lyte. Released on new Canterbury-based record label Thing Detector, BBM Baby combines ‘rave synth stabs’ with ‘ironically-aware lyricism’.
The track is said to be ‘distilling the ghost of BBM’s (Blackberry Messenger) social dominance into a nostalgia-cult chant “BBM, BBM, BBM…”. DS Lyte says: “BBM was an encapsulating phenomenon of my nostalgic dream of 'the noughties' and also represents, in my opinion, one of the most defining shifts from product as product, to consumer as a product.” It is part of the themed BBMme! EP which also features young artists Will Materialise, HARDW3RE and DS Lyte. Shift.
TOKYO TEA ROOM
Always In The Sun/ 3:50
Taken from their forthcoming album Feel Forever, Tokyo Tea Room are knocking it out of the park with Always In The Sun, continuing to cement their own brand of dream pop indie.
Released on Nice Guys Records, the Canterbury five-piece have long been one of the leading lights of the Kent music scene with a reputation of 'doing it properly'. This will continue with a tour to Europe and the United States as part of the record launch.
Taking to socials, of Always In The Sun, the band said: "The making of this track took us in a new direction, a slight departure from our usual sound. It’s so fun redefining what TTR can be and we hope you’ll be happy to join us on the journey! one of our favourites on the new album <3." Feel.
COLOUR OF HEARTACHE
Your Light and Dark / 4:14
Margate trip duo Colour of Heartache have brought their trip-hop-laced dream-pop to fore with new single Your Light & Dark. Channeling the ethereal elements of Portishead, Your Light and Dark is about embracing every part of yourself - the light and the dark, the fire and the rain, and discovering freedom through that acceptance.
They say: “Rather than resisting change or contradiction, it celebrates the beauty of surrendering to the full experience of being alive”. Dreamlike and uplifting, the song moves through themes of transformation, inner balance, and liberation, reminding us not to fear our complexity, but to let it open us. Attached.
MOOD
Appetite for Summer / 2:32
Wantsum Music?, powered by East Kent charity Pie Factory Music, releases Chasing Stars - an EP of original debut singles by three gifted young Thanet artists - mood, Lois French and AZZA - celebrating the raw talent and creativity of the next gen, all aged between 15 and 18. Every track was written and recorded at Pie’s studio in Ramsgate. We have picked out Appetite for Summer by mood, the duo of Mia Ried and Paddy Harris.
An uplifting, soulful track capturing warm summer days by the Kent coast. Stylistically, it has some Kate Nash feels, being able to turn from sweet smooth vocals into colloquial rhyming verse. Talent.
PAPER VERSES
Windstill /6:34
Rising folk duo Simone Lincoln and Matt Evans have released their debut album Windstill. Recorded at Big Jelly studios in Ramsgate, the 10-track collection of original acoustic songs explores the dysfunction, longing and hope within relationships. Matt’s unique acoustic flat-picking guitar style stands out, alongside Simone’s exceptional vocals.
The album features intricate melodies and beautiful two-part harmonies throughout, with some tracks complemented by the gentle hum of harmonium, harmonica and violin.
We have picked out title track Windstill which explores ‘thoughts on the potential and possibilities when you move outside of your comfort zone’. Desire.
