PEOPLE DEM TAKEOVER: De La Soul, Sugarhill Gang and Furious 5 come to Dreamland

People Dem Collective Collaborate With Dreamland To Bring Iconic Hip Hop Legends To Margate This Summer

Dreamland Margate in collaboration with People Dem Collective are delighted to announce that Grammy Award winning group, De La Soul will be joined this year by hip hop icons Sugarhill Gang and Furious 5 for a not-to-be-missed take over of the Scenic Stage at Dreamland on Saturday 23rd July.

Formed from Long Island, NY roots in 1987, the trio known as De La Soul changed the landscape of hip hop. Now, celebrating an incredible 30 years in the business, they continue to rock audiences with inscrutable samplings, whimsically irreverent lyrics, social commentary, light rhythm and laid-back rhymes.

From their seminal 1989 debut album 3 Feet High And Rising, to their Grammy-winning collaboration with Gorillaz, De La Soul are masters from the golden age of 90s rap. Spreading good vibes wherever they go, their optimistic attitude always guarantees a good time!

Joining them on stage for this huge show, Sugarhill Gang have an equally impressive lineage, dating back to 1979 when they crashed through the walls of the urban cities and into the mainstream of society with the first worldwide rap hit, ‘Rapper’s Delight’.

For the last 20 years, the original founders, Wonder Mike and Master Gee alongside Henry Williams (aka Hendogg) and DJ. T. Dynasty continue their tradition of creating a party atmosphere that makes everyone dance the night away as they perform for sold out crowds throughout the world.

In more legendary hip hop news, and marking the 40th anniversary of seminal, multi award winning, hip hop track The Message, the Sugarhill Gang along with the architects Grandmaster Melle Mel and Scorpio of The Furious 5 have joined forces to form a supergroup. This historic alliance marks a big moment of the culture as these two groups put the genre on the map.

People Dem Collective said: This is an exciting moment for People Dem Collective as we present our first co-promoted event with Dreamland. It’s these types of collaborations that will allow us to go beyond simply platforming iconic black culture makers, towards creating truly reciprocal cultural ecosystems - profiling early career artists, through the mentorship and support of their idols, while broadening the breadth and enticement of the programmes offered to audiences.”

The event is for people aged 14+ and over (under 16’s must be accompanied by an adult over 18 years old)
