Folkestone Documentary Festival return for bumper 4th year

Featuring the best in new international documentaries by the sea

Folkestone Documentary Festival returns for its fourth edition from 17th-20th October, featuring the best in new international documentaries by the sea.

Described by Screen International as one of the UK film festivals you need to know, it’s one of Kent’s biggest film events and one of the few documentary film festivals in the UK outside London, growing in significance in the film festival calendar for public and industry.

At its home at The Silver Screen, Folkestone’s gem of an independent cinema, the festival will feature 12 documentaries of mixed length, followed by filmmaker Q&As, talks, masterclasses and film-industry events.

There will also be an immersive media, visual-art showcase, alongside social events such as the popular Community Walk and Community Meal, which take place in Folkestone’s great outdoors.

While last year’s line-up featured stories about body image, LGBTQIA rights, disability, performance, family, migration, dementia, big stones, little puffins, skating and saunas, the 2024 programme will be officially unveiled in September.

Set to include films from across the world, including debut UK screenings after successful world premieres at big international festivals, the programme will be put together with Kent’s diverse communities, their interests and concerns in mind.

Curated by documentary-makers James Collie and Charlie Phillips, the festival’s philosophy is to programme a mix of artistic films, social and political stories and fun experiences to provide a deep grounding in the documentary form.

It’s all about showing work that really means something for the concerns of the local community in 2024. All for an affordable festival pass that remains amazing value at £45 (£25 concessions)... plus, where else can you watch films and then dive into the sea to process your thoughts?

Festival passes are on sale now through Silver Screen at folkestonecinema.com
