DAN LYONS & THE TENANTS - GOLDEN HANDSHAKE
Margate group Dan Lyons & The Tenants have released new album ‘Shuttered Dreams’.
Dan, the former drummer of Fat White Family and Phobophobes, released his first solo album ‘SubSuburbia’ back in 2020 and has returned with a new outfit that takes aim at the mundanity and irritating structures of modern society… and that’s just their name.
Single, ‘Golden Handshake’ features Asha Lorenz from Sorry on vocals, is accompanied by a film noir-esq video shot at Margate’s Tom Thumb Theatre.
Elsewhere on the album you will find elements of indie, rock and synth as backing tracks to not-so-subliminal messages of frustration and anti-establishment. It’s fu*king ace.
DEBDEPAN - DARKEST HOUR
Rising female duo Debdepan have announced debut track ‘Darkest Hour’, marking the second release of the emerging youth record label Wantsum Music?
Childhood friends Chelsea Tolhurst and Grace Bontoft established the band during the first lockdown in 2020, out of a growing need to express themselves and create the music they wanted to hear. Proficient guitarist and vocalist Chelsea and gifted bassist Grace are known for their quick-fire creativity, often writing a song in a day and performing it that same night.
Discovered by Pie Factory Music’s Emerging Artists and the Wantsum Music? collective, Debdepan’s ethereal, experimental sound and grassroots ethos chimed with the label, which launched in autumn 2021 to promote and support young homegrown talent.
“Lyric-wise Darkest Hour is open for interpretation; but the origin of the song is personal, it’s a reflection on an experience I had, that I needed to capture musically in order to move through it” says Chelsea. “After modifying the BPM numerous times, Darkest Hour is intended to captivate listeners, to move them through one place emotionally to another – to journey to the quiet within the loud” adds Grace.
FAINT RINGS - PALMED OFF
Producer, DJ & artist Faint Rings (Conor Rowlan) has dropped a fresh taste of electronic music.
A passion project initially conceptualised mid pandemic, and having performed in various bands and musical projects over the years, 2021 saw Faint Rings seek out and pursue his deep obsession of underground electronic music.
Evoking vivid imagery of late-night beach party raves, lush sunsets to early morning sunrises and everything in-between. With influences ranging from the diverse worlds of underground Lo Fi & Minimal House to Disco & Italo Disco cuts; including artists such asHarrison BPD, Julio Bashmore, Four Tet, Floating Points & many more, Faint Rings’ sound offers a slice of afterparty magic. Expect retro vibes, 90’s nostalgia and straight up dance floor weapons.
NAMANI & CMILLANO - COMPLACENT?!#
In association with Canterbury rap collective ‘escape plan’ (@esc.pln) Namani and CMillano have been ripping up the underground rap scene in this area and beyond for quite some time now.
Everything released is doing bits, racking up plays, racking up hits… I will leave the rapping to them. Each with their different flow style, latest collaboration ‘COMPLACENT?!#’ is just another example of the group knowing production, delivery and marketing inside and out. Sit back and watch, they are taking off.
