NICK NOTES, YRK RD & L SILVA - GET UP & GO

Having got back in the studio with production duo Yrk Rd, North Kent’s Nick Notes and L Silva are providing faceted motivation on new track ‘Get Up & Go’.

With an arrangement that includes flowering keys, trappy beats and a mixture of poignant bars and mellow, expressive vocals, the single is a proper grower.

Once again the adaptability of the collaboration - which represents OuttaCity Music - results in such a creative outcome. There’s no wasted verse.

“I find it hard to get up and go”, say the lyrics. Well you could have fooled us. This is movin’.

Mimi Webb - 24/5

On her socials, young pop songwriter Mimi Webb is practically bursting at the seams to let everyone know that her debut EP, Seven Shades Of Heartbreak, will be dropping in October.

Ahead of that she’s today dropped a new single and video from it called 24/5 and that explosive energy is certainly present here, too.

24/5 is a song about desire, about a need so deep that even though she knows the person she wants is “lying in somebody else’s bed” she still aches to make it work.

At first we hear her soulful voice pouring out about their push-pull attraction, knowing it’s probably not the right move for heart, but she can’t help but obsess. The elegiac chorus takes the idea of “hurts so good” and expands it into an anthemic downpour of beats, piano chords and, of course, Webb’s powerful voice front and centre, making us understand – and feel – why she needs to ignore her better instincts and just keep chasing after this deep attraction.

Voka Gentle - Respect My Eccentricity Pt 2

Voka Gentle are onto their fourth pre-album single, with WRITHING! Finally arriving next month, but it seems to be a very deep bag of quality cuts they have, as ‘Respect My Eccentricity Pt 2’ is just as brilliant as any of their previous.

Here, Voka Gentle set as afloat on a gliding guitar and lightly booming drums, the structure and tone similar to a classic clacker rock jam but with plenty of the trio’s usual atmospherics and electronics all around.

Lyrically, they are similarly relaxed, observing life from afar and trying to keep their worries and anxieties at bay.

It’s perfect for a Friday, as it feels like coming to the end of your tether for one week, pushing it all to the side to just enjoy the weekend, knowing that they’ll all be waiting for you again come Monday.

ART SCHOOL GIRLFRIEND - GOOD AS I WANTED

Taken from the brand new album ‘Is It Light Where You Are’, Margate-based Polly Mackey, AKA Art School Girlfriend, has created a track that screams “playlist me”.

As immersive as it is enduring, ‘Good As I Wanted’ feels both like a question and an unwavering statement from the artist.

While easily comfortable in sound for a chilled house set, there is this unnerving essence, driving and growing throughout the track, with its techno-styled metronome beat feeling like it’s ready to explode at any moment, ready to flummox Berlin’s Berghain… and it keeps you there beautifully.. As always, Polly’s carefully placed and ethereal vocals inspire. Brilliant.
