Board the Waves: The Ramsgate Jetboarder

From London to Beach life - How Board the Waves’ Nick Turner swapped his career in the city for jetboarding, writes Marijke Hall

Imagine being able to surf the best wave that never ends.

That’s how Nick Turner describes jetboarding.

He admits when he first discovered the watersport while on a beach in Thailand three years ago he was mesmerised.

Tracking down the owner of the board, he rented it out for a few hours and was completely hooked.

A year later, back on home turf living in London, he moved to Ramsgate and bought his first board soon after.

After a decade working in London in the street food industry it was quite a change of lifestyle.

But he’s never looked back, launching Board the Waves (@boardthewaves), Kent’s first jetboard school and hire company, in summer 2020 off the back of his new-found passion.

“Imagine being able to surf the best wave that never ends or snowboard on a perfect powder day without having to get on a flight or a ski lift - jeboarding is just that,” he says.

“I did a few snowboard seasons in my twenties so I’m always longing for the sense of freedom and adrenalin you get on the snow. Jetboarding has filled that void and the fact that I can pick it up any day of the week and head to my local beach is even better.”

He now wants to teach others the watersport and offers an induction lesson or jetboard lesson and hire. He also offers a four-hour hire bundle.

“If you have previous experience with water or snow sports it’s a bonus, but definitely not essential,” he adds.

“The board has a motorised engine so it does all the hard work for you and after one or two lessons you’ll be confidently flying through the water.”

Board the Waves mainly operates in Ramsgate but may move locations depending on conditions.
