It goes… get really good at BBQing, buy a smoker, set out on tour, get a permanent premises - a pop-up street food dream has been realised.

Having amassed an incredible reputation during their time working the capital scene, including becoming regulars at the sizeable and numerous events hosted by Printworks London, Street Kings Smoke Shack has set up shop a little closer to home.

Whitstable couple Tony and Makalla have opened in the courtyard of Ashford’s buzziest new venue, Coachworks and ‘cene magazine was invited down for the gorge, sorry, I meant ‘launch’.

Having jacked in the 9 to 5, it has been full smoke ahead for the pair who have been inundated with hungry customers since the first week of July.

From 12-hour smoked pulled pork served in a Grain & Hearth (Whitstable) brioche roll to the smoked British beef brisket, served with pickles and homemade BBQ sauce, the protein-packed menu is divided up into ‘Sandwiches’, ‘Meat By The Pound’, and ‘Sides’

Amongst our sharing platter was the juicy Babyback Ribs, smoked for two hours then wrapped in bbq sauce before another two hours in the smoker. There is the lighter offering of the smoked turkey and a two-hour oak-smoked chorizo sausage also ready to put pay to your diet. Beautiful.

I would potentially argue that the sides are just as much to write home about as the mains!

The four-hour, slow-cooked BBQ Beans are to die for as is the creamiest, most flavour-packed Mac and Cheese I’ve had in some time - consisting of Cheddar, Red Leicester and a touch of blue.

Using majority Kent-sourced products, the Street Kings Smoke Shack is a great addition to the Kent dining horizon.
