Brand new to Bank Street in Maidstone, Jerky Werky’s opened in mid-January, bringing a Caribbean flavour to the town centre.
The new restaurant has been launched by Mitchell Bennett, a familiar face around Maidstone, having been a key promoter presenting Garage Nation events at the town’s late-night venues.
The menu features well-known Caribbean dishes, from curry goat to jerk chicken, and Jamaican patties to fried dumplings. Taking the slogan ‘Food so nice, you haffi order twice’ at face value, we ordered two lunchtime-menu meal deals.
The crispy Jamaican-style fried chicken, marinated in island herbs and spices, was beautifully crunchy on the outside and tender and juicy on the inside. It was served alongside rice and peas, plantain and salad. We also had the 48-hour marinated jerk pork belly, grilled and served in a classic, spicy jerk sauce, which really packed a punch.
Arguably the star of the show was the ackee and saltfish - soft buttery ackee fruit served with flaky salted cod, sweet peppers and onions - stunning.
With its home-delivery service, Werky’s is a brilliant new addition to the town.
