Raise a glass to riverside history
As crisp autumn days arrive, Gravesend is starting the season with Oktoberfest - a September celebration that is true to German tradition.
Get your tickets: Oktoberfest takes place on Friday, 18 September, at The Three Daws, Gravesend’s historic riverside inn. Tickets are available at the venue and online.
The town’s pubs add plenty of character, with folklore, local history and river views making them ideal stops after a waterfront walk.
Pubs with a past
The Rum Puncheon, formerly the New Falcon, is linked with tales of smugglers, pirates and naval press gangs.
The Clarendon Royal Hotel recalls a royal moment from 1863, when the Prince of Wales welcomed Princess Alexandra of Denmark at what is now Royal Terrace Pier.
Further along the coast path, the Ship & Lobster adds a Dickens connection, reflecting the author’s links with nearby Gad’s Hill.
Music, cafés and local character
Beyond the riverfront, local venues offer everything from heavy rock and spoken word to café culture and “bring your own vinyl” evenings. Look out for Riviera, The Red Lion or Café 84.
On November 14th, the town centre streets turn up the volume for a throwback rave packed with early-noughties garage and grime energy, as Lisa Maffia and Romeo bring the scene back to life.

For family days out, Meopham PYO offers pumpkin picking and an autumn BBQ, while nearby White Finch Cafe serves winter drinks, cakes and snacks.
On 31 October, Basement Bakehouse will host a Halloween Picnic on the Green at Windmill Hill’s old bowling green, with coffees, cakes, pastries and cinnamon buns.
