A SCISSORTAIL STAY - A GREAT AIRBNB TO FIND IN MARGATE & WESTGATE
Hospitality on three levels as Margate’s Scissortail spreads its wings
If you have been into Margate’s Scissortail Coffee (@scissortail_) you will know that the founders have brought a bit of that classic US hospitality to their instantly popular caffeine destination.
Named after the Oklahoma state bird, Scissortail opened its doors during the first lockdown to provide a takeaway option and service-with-a-smile during what was a tough time for everyone.
Siblings Britton and Missy Logan (who were brought up in Oklahoma) and Missy’s partner Antony Shaw have brought Tulsa vibes to Margate’s Old Town, offering “No snobbery. No judgement. Just a damn fine cup of coffee”.
“We are a small coffee shop, with a focus of serving craft coffee, quickly,” says Missy. “We want people to come in and know what they’re going to get and that they’re going to get it quickly, without having to wait around. But it’s going to be the best coffee you can get in a short amount of time.
“And it’s service with a smile - we want every guest to Scissortail feel welcome, so that whoever you are, whatever coffee you order - even if you want to put five sugars into it - we’re fine with that.”
After launching the Scissortail Parlour - a retail area in the coffee shop - the newest arm of the brand is Scissortail Stay, comprising two beautiful Airbnb spaces decked out in modern boho chic.
The first is above the coffee shop, offering two bedrooms and space enough for five - just a three-minute walk from the beach. A refurbished bookcase featuring trinkets curated from across Margate since Missy moved to the town five years ago is one gem to pore over, while guests will be also able to pour over a cup of Scissortail coffee, with beans grinder and even an espresso machine provided… if they don’t fancy popping downstairs.
Of course, there’s the added extra of a great location to check out the vintage shops, art galleries and trendy food and drink spots that Margate and Cliftonville have to offer.
Over at Westgate, Scissortail has opened its vintage Victorian basement flat.
“It had to be completely renovated - it was like a cave, with dirt floors,” says Missy. “The team have sourced some amazing fixtures from around Thanet, including a fireplace surround from a local farm and a reclaimed and refinished Victorian claw-foot bathtub providing a unique focal point.
“The point of them is to give people a home away from home, with everything that one might need for a self-catering holiday by the sea.”
