‘In Search of Refuge’ - £10k art commission exploring links to refugees

It will be a new artwork inspired by an object found within one or more of the of the Kent-Medway Museum Partnership collections

A £10,000 artist commission exploring historic and contemporary links to refugees found within the collections of the Kent-Medway Museum Partnership (KMMP NPO) is available for pitches

‘In Search of Refuge’ will see the creation of a new artwork inspired by an object found within one or more of the KMMP NPO museum collections, or by an identified absence of an object significant to the history and stories of their locations.

The commission looks to promote research into the impacts of refugees as found in the collections of the museum partners, and the towns and communities they represent. The outcome of the project will see the creation of an artwork with which audiences can engage with and use a tool to further explore the research made by the selected artist or artist group.

The developed artwork will be collected and exhibited by the partner museums, tour as part of an exhibition, and see the delivery of workshops, talks and public engagement activities.

Luke Currall, Cultural Projects Manager, Kent Medway Museum NPO, said:“The term ‘refugee’ comes directly from the French word 'réfugié and originally applied to the Walloon and Huguenot ‘strangers’ who came to England after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685. From industry, technology, cuisines and culture, the influence that refugee communities and individuals have had in Kent and beyond is incredibly significant though clear evidence of which is often found lacking within our museums and collections.”

The deadline to submit proposals is 12 noon 17th December 2021 with the successful artist being appointed in January 2022 to develop and delivery their work for April 2022.
