NEW MUSIC: FT. APHRAH, MATHS TIME JOY, DAVID GOTSOUND, SHRINK & DUX
Kent’s New Music Friday is picking out tracks that have entered our ears in the past week!
This Friday, while you are social distancing or even heading back to work, let these new tracks from Kent artists tune your ears in to what the most musically productive county in the country sounds like right now.
We have added all tracks to the ‘cene #KeepitKent Spotify Playlist HERE
APHRAH - HOLD YOU BACK (JOSS RYAN REMIX)
Instagram & Twitter: @aphrah_music
Canterbury vocalist Aphrah has joined forces with producer and Nando’s Soho Studio resident engineer Joss Ryan for a UK garage remix of ‘Hold You Back’.
Aphrah says: “It’s a song about looking back at your younger self and not letting anything hold you back.”
A tribute to the UK garage scene in the 90’s, the emotive track has the beats, the drops and the vocals that were so synonymous with the era. Reminiscing.
MATHS TIME JOY - TWO STEPS FT. KEVIN GARRETT
Producer, singer, songwriter and lauded ‘one to watch’, Kent’s Maths Time Joy (Tim Worthington) is continuing on his ascent to the top of the UK music game.
Having already fallen for his skills in harvesting soulful vocals and dreamy melodies on tracks like ‘Reason’ and ‘Real Deal’, we were so happy to see him back in 2021 with ‘Two Steps’.
And, he returns with more formidable company, in the form of Pittsburgh native Kevin Garrett, who is perhaps best known for his work as a collaborator on Beyonce’s ‘Lemonade’ album.
‘Two Steps’ is captivating and delicate but still packed with groove so as to keep it light and fresh.
“We don’t have to fall in love, over and over,” say the lyrics. Too late. Stirring.
DAVID GOTSOUND - INVOLVED
Not a week goes by that we don’t have another track dropping from David GotSound.
The Bexley-based artist continues on his roulette wheel of musical output… will it land on UK Grime, Golden Era Hip Hop, Trap? It doesn’t really matter, because every one is a winner.
New track ‘Involved’ has the trademark aggression in tone, superlative sports metaphors and polished rhyming scheme.
“Tell them boys I’m involved….”, is the key phrase. And David is more than involved in the race for our new favourite artist. Impeccable.
SHRINK - CUT YOU LOOSE
Tunbridge Wells artist Sam Breathwick, better known as Shrink, continues on his journey to develop his own brand of indie/electro pop with self-titled EP ‘Shrink’.
Formerly recognised as Vasser, who has garnered millions of plays for his tracks like ‘Whatever You Want’, Sam’s new track ‘Cut You Loose’, smacks you right in the feels.
Dynamic guitars and purring drums form the sound of a clock ticking… a brilliant backing to lyrics centred around looking back and considering time spent on someone else. Measured.
OHNO DA FRENCH X DUX - RESPECT
Having been longtime fans of DUX (he played our first event back in 2017) , we are alway so buzzed when he is part of a new release. This time he is working with Ohno Da French, a skilled producer who harnesses sounds from across the spectrum of music
In new track ‘Respect’, Kent-based MC DUX does what he does best and eloquently delivers lyrics that stay true to himself.
“…there’s no money in UK hip hop…as soon as I heard ‘money’ my ears just switched off… ain’t about having a diamond ring or wrist watch, don’t need ice dripping to know that my sh*t’s hot..”
Ohno Da French delivers on his promise to explore music with an operatic looped melody to back an perfectly formed banger. Collaboration.
