NEW MUSIC: FT. PYX, SHAPES & SKIES, IAMAQ AND KWES E
WE HAVE FOUR NEW SONGS FOR YOU TO LISTEN TO THIS WEEK
This Friday, while you are social distancing or even heading back to work, let these new tracks from Kent artists tune your ears in to what the most musically productive county in the country sounds like right now.
We have added all tracks to the ‘cene #KeepitKent Spotify Playlist HERE
PYX - 2 WEEKS
After exploding into the indie music scene in 2019 with the contagious ‘Play On’, Pyx have been steadily growing a cult following through a slay of meticulously crafted singles, displaying the songwriting versatility and attention to detail of mastermind Wesley Triffitt.
Wesley is no stranger to the Kent music scene, cutting his teeth with local lo-fi favourites Tin Foil Astronaut and under his new guise has secured plays on Abbie McCarthy’s esteemed BBC Introducing in Kent radio show, before graduating to BBC 6Music and being invited to perform at a Fresh on The Net live event.
Debut EP ‘Ode To the Sleepers’ on A Certain Kind Records, offers ‘Two weeks’ as the leading single, recorded and produced by frequent collaborator James Simpson from Kent indie heroes Indoor Pets.
Of the track Wesley says “I wrote this song after watching Werner Herzog's chilling and touching ‘Grizzly Man’ which tells of the tragic death of Timothy Tredwell, a devoted and eccentric conservationist who was killed by one of the bears he was trying to protect, as was his girlfriend, Amie Huguenard, who was camping with him. They extended their trip by two weeks, hence the name of the track”. Going further, he says “Timothy believed he had bridged the gap between human and beast, and this amazing film for me falls within that age old tradition of reminding us how powerful and indifferent nature can be.”
SHAPES & SKIES - EARTH
Shapes (Circus Records) and Skies are two artists that have been very close to ‘cene magazine since the very beginning, and we are so happy to see them working together.
Combining the rock/pop-punk of Folkestone duo Skies (Alie Cotter & Jericho Tozer) with the jumpin’ mixmaster of bass skills, Shapes (Craig Hayward), new track ‘Earth’ has got us gassed. Engaging vocals, high energy beats and addictive melody, ‘Earth’ is one to pump up loud.
IAMAQ - HOLD YOUR HEART
Dreamy vocals and synth-n-beat atmospherics, IAMAQ have returned with new track ‘Hold Your Heart’ to take you away to a colourful, stimulating place…. maybe even another decade.
Hypnotic and creative, IAMAQ continue to signpost a growing movement of kaleidoscopic pop with hints of 1980s New Wave. It’s a beautiful meandering journey of a song to float upon. See you on the other side.
KWES E - PLIERS
A lyrical playground of metaphors, this track has ‘gripped us like pliers’. The East Kent rapper has created a chilled melody sewn together with laid back beats and soothing but poignant words.
“I’m acting like a a tool again”… in ‘Pliers’, Kwes e has produced a track that hits the spot for urban love songs, it’s brooding without being beggy. He’s playing it f**king cool. And we love it.
