Review: Saint Smokeys, Canterbury
“…wasn't a surprise to anyone who had tried their food at the original shop…”
Having been a mainstay for almost a decade in the King’s Mile, Saint Smokeys’ move to a larger premises at the beginning of this year wasn't a surprise to anyone who had tried their food at the original shop.
Now at St George’s Place, the restaurant has quadrupled its size with more space to accommodate fans of outrageously good Caribbean-inspired BBQ.
Created by father and son duo, Saint Davis and Luke Bradshaw, they have been able to spread their wings in the new space, adding cocktails, coffees and bottomless brunches to their already, much-talked about food.
Originally known for being a great place for quality grab-and-go dining, the new space with stripped back tables, exposed brick and industrial lighting is a cool place to sit in and get stuck in. So we did.
We took on the Mini Platter (£19.95), with a quarter flame-grilled chicken, two succulent wings, a juicy fillet, and a thigh, perfect for dipping in a choice of two sauces - we chose the spicy route, but you could also choose the Saint Smokeys in-house, homemade BBQ Sauce.
If that wasn’t enough, you also get the choice of two small sides, or one large side. We chose the two, obvs. A bowl of fragrant rice and peas which had a lovely, light sweetness and, arguably the star of the show, the dumplings. Three of the sweet, fluffy little fellas were an amazing addition.
A pint of Red Stripe was the perfect wet accomplice for a bountiful platter that would satisfy most - though we thought it necessary to try the creamy Mac N Cheese (£5.95), crispy halloumi fries (£5.45) and crunchy coleslaw (£3.85) as well. Bless up.
