UTR x 'cene : Volume.2
The second in a series of new collaborations between ‘cene Magazine and UnderTheRadar (@theutrproject), we pick out the hidden gems of Kent and new music that you need in your lives, writes Dom Sant
Phil - All or Nothing
With such a mellow and laid-back instrumental taking the spotlight for the first few seconds of the track, you can tell that something remarkable is coming. I don’t think there has been an instance in recent memory where I’ve heard such a laid-back flow and cadence.
I've got a big love for the “Many Men” insertion within the body of the track and just when you think it can’t get any more remarkable, the multi-layering takes you on a different path into the latter stages. Gentle and serene chords are tied to Phil’s lyrics as he steals the show. Poetry personified. There’s no way you can deny the talent on show here, and we’re super sorry it's taken us this long to tune-in.
Claire Pitt Wigmore - Lunar Lit Skies
Continuing the theme of serenity, we have the psychedelic “Lunar Lit Skies” from talented Broadstairs artist Claire Pitt Wigmore. The track encapsulates such a beautiful sound, with a magnitude of gorgeous guitar riffs running riot throughout, but intertwined with majestic vocals. Claire doesn’t get bogged down in endless lyrics, just adding to the overall impact and message of the track. A very laid-back and atmospheric track to fall in love with.
Namani - Sommer Rays
You cannot ignore Sommer Rays by Namani. Coming from July release “The Sommer Pack”, this record is incredibly addictive. On soft instrumentals, Namani packs a fun and diverse flow throughout the whole two-minutes. Added to that, it has one of the most immersive hooks that will be locked into your head for hours on end.
It’s all about the little details; like the double entendre within the song name - with one meaning as recognition to the summery atmosphere the track gives off and the second giving a nod to the famous influencer, Sommer Ray. This track, as well as the EP, is an essential for your playlist, be sure to check it out.
MaZz - Making My Way (feat. Manil)
Escape Plan are no joke. It has taken over two volumes of the UTR x ‘cene collaborations just to scratch the surface of their greatness / potential. “Making My Way” is another prime example. Coming from the insanely talented MaZz, we have the collaboration which sees her team up with another artist to watch, Manil.
MaZz’ vocals steal the show without any doubt. I thought this Volume.2 was turning into a playlist of chilled, laid-back tracks, but when they get as good as this, how can it not feature. Joined with the two prolific vocalists, there’s a fun and summery instrumental to help you enjoy what’s left of the sunshine. Be sure to tune in to this one!
PYX - Is This What You Want?
“Is This What You Want?” is a record which feels like there is multiple tracks and layers in one. Led by the Folkestone-native, we go through a truly anthemic journey and sound, led by some emphatically beautiful vocals. From just hearing a little snippet of the discography, we can tell that the potential for PYX, is endless. Undeniably epic, “Is This What You Want?” Is a tune that you could fall in love with instantly. You won’t regret it.
Jude Ness - Estate
A track we discovered earlier in the week, but without any doubt, a track which is so addictive. With incredible percussion coinciding with elite guitar chords, the production value is immense, while the hook will be in your memory for hours.
Jude Ness encapsulates what is so great about experimental and alternative takes on the foundation of genres. There is a unique cadence shown and that’s what makes it stand out. Alongside that, the subject matter is evocative, too, delving into previous mistakes and romance.
