Profound Sound Festival heads to Folkestone in Feb
Profound Sound, brought to you by Folkestone Fringe and Hot Salvation, is back for its fifth year
Profound Sound, brought to you by Folkestone Fringe and Hot Salvation, is back for its fifth year, bringing a true gem of a festival to liven up the darkest days of winter. With three days of alternative, experimental live performances, installations, talks and D.I.Y workshops, this festival continues to grow and build, bringing a truly alternative music offering to the South East.
This year we are dialing up the intimacy with a focus on nurturing homegrown talent. Local composer and performer Johnny Tomlinson brings an extra special interactive installation to Customs House on Saturday, where visitors trigger found sounds and music to create and ever-changing sonic composition. Local composer and performer, Anna Braithwait is also performing at Quarterhouse on Sunday where you’ll experience warped tape loops, fine art, voice and dance spontaneously interpret music in real-time.
International acts this year headline the Quarterhouse stage in our Saturday night double-bill with Venezuelan artist, Migal Noya, a pioneering early synthesis. His transcendental, deeply intellectual take on MIDI sequencing imbibes the 1980's Western world's ambient-electronic scene with his own gravitas and vibrant tropical colour.
Also on the line-up is Hrím, bringing you music beyond our imagination. Featuring Icelandic folk singer Ösp Eldjárn and our very own 2019 local co-curators Anil Sebastian and Cherif Hashizume. Expect graceful and immaculate vocals; intricate and sophisticated harmonies and gnarly and organic electronics as they shape a very unique sonic landscape. Follow this with our afterparty at Space where a top line-up of DJs will finish off an epic night of music.
We’ve got some great free workshops across the weekend where local artists and musicians can learn new things. If you want to start to make your own electronic music, check out Cherif Hashizume series of coding workshops which launches as part of the festival. We also have Miguel Noya giving a one-off interactive lecture where you will listen to and learn ways to play and compose music beyond the established standard and logical forms. Both of these workshops take place on Sunday.
You can purchase a Festival pass for £15, or you can buy a ticket for £10 for the headline acts on Saturday night. There are also a number of free events and under 23’s go free – booking is essential for all events.
