THE NATURAL DYEWORKS RESIDENCY

The Natural Dyeworks will spend a two week residency within The Hot Tin, building a palette of colour based on plants and ingredients sourced within a one mile radius of The Hot Tin.
The Natural Dyeworks is Ros Humphries, a botanical dyer living in Faversham with her partner, daughter Poppy and Border Terrier Polly.
She spent 20 years as a buyer at Habitat prior to starting her business last year.
After becoming disillusioned with consumerism and concern for the environment she re-evaluated the role she wanted to play in society and at a similar time discovered the art of natural dyeing.
She makes ribbons and home wares with care and love for the environment, treading as lightly as possible on this fragile planet. She also teaches group and 1:1 workshops.
She uses only plant-based ingredients, sources sustainable fabrics where possible, recycles waste water and omits plastic from the business.
She said: “I love natural dyeing for the deep connection it gives me to the seasons and to the natural world, and for the constant wonder of the infinite colour palette nature has to offer.”

Ros will build a palette of colour based on plants and ingredients sourced within a one mile radius of The Hot Tin. She will also use waste ingredients from the cafe, such as tea and coffee. Plants will be foraged or collected from Ros’s allotment daily then dye pots will be made and fabrics dyed.

Throughout The Hot Tin there will be swatches and dye books to peruse. There will be a scraps basket for kids to enjoy sticking and creating. Selected items dyed on site will be available to buy.
