PICTURE PURRFECT - Have you seen this cat graffiti?
Graffiti artist CatNeil has been on a mission to make people pay attention and question everything!
If you ever leave your house and you live in Kent, it means you have probably walked past CatNeil (@catneil.33).
Sometimes he’s alone, sometimes he is with an inspirational or reflective statement. And sometimes he is accompanied by some happy, peace-loving eggs. You all know the ones. Well, once again curiosity got the better of us and we tracked down the artist behind the graffiti. In an anonymous conversation, we asked them to tell us a few tails.
Hi CatNeil! What should we call you? Mr Cat? Neil?
Yo! Well, my name is **** and sometimes I like to play a character called CatNeil (one word). Or maybe I’m a character that CatNeil plays in his down-time, I’m not too sure.
The first question has got to be… why cats?
I dunno, really. I like cats! 🐱
Is there a message behind the Cat sign?
CatNeil is an eight-dimensional spiritual entity who has incarnated here to help raise the planet’s vibration to help usher in the Age of Aquarius! Which was a surprise to me because I always thought he was just a friendly cat. He has a lot of crazy ideas about time, consciousness and the true nature of reality – and sometimes, when I’m stoned, I’m inclined to believe them...
I think his main message is to PAY ATTENTION! We live in a strange, strange world that gets stranger every day. We need to question it, question ourselves, question EVERYTHING!
Love is the Law and the Law is for ALL! 33 33 33!
We have seen your work all over Kent – literally every town we visit. How do you choose your locations and why?
I love to spend time with my friends around Kent and CatNeil loves a free ride! At this point it’s a compulsion, if I’m in a new place I’m painting kitties!
Do you have a favourite location you have hit so far?
We haven’t found our favourite spot yet, but CatNeil is convinced he’ll know it when he sees it.
Have you ever been caught in the act?
Generally, I get on with the police. You can’t avoid the occasional slap on the wrist, but that stuff never bothers me – I know the mission is RIGHTEOUS!
We have seen you work with the Egg Man (who we featured last year) – did you go off to do it together or separately with a heads-up on locations?
What a f**king champ! I don’t know the guy super well, but he’s doing the Lord’s work. When we painted in Margate, he really opened my eyes to how easy it is to paint whatever you want – all it takes is a little bit of self-belief. We’ll link up again for sure, once he’s finished his little break.
Do you do other artwork, or is it full-time pussycat purveying?
I like doing a bit of graffiti now and then. It got me where I need to be and it’ll always influence my work, but it’s a hobby these days. CatNeil is my true calling.
How many of your cats are actually out there?
Not enough, the Great Work is never done!
