Mark Jackson reviews three eCars…

Whether you like it or not, electric cars are the future of road travel around the world.

And while there is still a long way to go before they fully replace their petrol and diesel counterparts (and before we fully understand their impact on the planet), it’s probably time to start thinking about them as a realistic option.

So we sent our resident car expert Mark Jackson to test out a few models and give us the lowdown on these three eCars...

Volkswagen ID.3 - Canterbury Volkswagen

The first thing you will notice is the space inside - it’s a proper family-sized hatchback, which makes it brilliant for longer journeys. Supportive, comfortable seats play their part in this, too, while the easy soft-touch controls are a surprising little addition that the kids mess about with.

I loved the ‘Play’ and ‘Pause’ pedals (accelerate and brake, obvs), which add to the light-hearted and stylish Interior. The IQ lighting means you are in complete control to tailor everything from your interiors to your full beams.
The quickest of three cars driven, the VW ID.3 has a monster range (by electric standards) of up to 338 miles (WLTP).

VERDICT:

Spacious and Long Ranging

"I f**king loved it... Love just how easy it was to set up and drive"

TOP FEATURE: Customisable Intelligent lighting

Kia EV6 - Canterbury Kia

A smooth, sophisticated and sports-style interior highlighted by a dark, sweeping dash with two big screens had me feeling like a space pilot.

With a rear end like a rocket ship and cool pop-out door handles, the Kia EV6 really is something from the future. It has incredible camera technology – pop the indicator on and the dash will show your blind spots from cameras in your wing-mirrors. How cool is that!?

For a big crossover car (and I mean, it’s proper big), it’s incredibly light to drive.

With a range of up to 328 miles (WLTP), it has a seven-year warranty, making it exceptionally appealing.

VERDICT:

Futuristic and Fun

"A surprisingly light and nimble drive for a big car"

TOP FEATURE: Blind spot camera

Lexus UX300e - Jemca Lexus Sidcup

Now, let’s get serious. The Lexus UX300e isn’t messing about. It knows what it does and it does it with quality.
Modern meets classic on the interior features – for example the analogue clock sitting next to a giant sat-vav screen. Leather interiors are complimented by a heated steering wheel; it’s solid and safe in feeling.

A great function is the area-view cameras for all parking angles, effectively giving you a bird’s-eye-view of the car. It’s a compact SUV but with a great-sized boot, making it a great car to start your journey in electric cars, with a range of up to 196 miles (WLTP).

VERDICT:

Sophisticated and Stylish

"A surprisingly light and nimble drive for a big car"

TOP FEATURE: Heated steering wheel
