New creative space Hotel Michele to open in Cliftonville

The opening exhibition is now on, taking its title from the charitable organisation that once occupied the shop opposite on Northdown Road, Cats in Crisis

A brand new studio and creative space has been launched in Cliftonville called Hotel Michele (@hotel_michele

And the opening exhibition is now on, taking its title from the charitable organisation that once occupied the shop opposite on Northdown Road, Cats in Crisis.

Artists Kavel Rafferty and Thelma Speirs are behind the series of work, marking a shift in direction for both of their practices, from commercial illustration and fashion towards making art for exhibition spaces.

Rafferty makes assemblages from printed matter that she has collected from various thrift stores and auction sites.

These then go through a subtle process of manipulation to either erase or single out a meaning or create a new form that is individual and unique.

Speirs presents a series of abstracted pop portraits made up of common children’s stickers that convey observations she has made of the cats she has known and loved.

The Cats In Crisis exhibition is at Hotel Michele at 231 Northdown Road in Cliftonville, and runs until May 1.

It is open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, 12pm to 6pm.

Hotel Michele is a shared exhibition space which has been set up to facilitate a programme of individually organised exhibitions, workshops and events by Kavel Rafferty and Roland Ross.
